Substance Use, Gambling and Addiction

There comes a moment when you recognize that substances or gambling are having a harmful impact on your life. There are a variety of reasons why you may be using or addicted. Some use to help numb physical pain, relax, have fun, sleep, as well to help manage symptoms of trauma and a deep sense of loneliness. The trouble is, you can’t selectively numb the bad without also numbing your ability to feel joy, love and connection, making it very difficult to thrive. Addiction robs you of your ability to be fully and wholeheartedly present and often leaves a path of destruction in its wake. Living in active addiction, functional or not, is no simple way to live.

Addiction counselling will help you identify and interrupt your cycle of addiction, manage cravings, plan for relapse and cope with all of the fears around what's next. We will support you in finding something other than substances or gambling to provide you comfort and relief. We know you never intended for things to be this way and you deserve a safe and non-judgemental space to process all of the shame, guilt, anxiety, heartache and pressure that substances may have caused in your life. It can be incredibly empowering to explore your relationship with substances and work through your experiences of trauma that left you feeling disconnected and disheartened.

At Counselling & Co. our goal is to ensure you feel supported and met with respect and compassion. We will work together to cultivate the belief that you are worthy of love, belonging and forgiveness in order to begin the healing process. We will work to create lasting and effective change, access resources and help you better understand how substances found a way into your life, what purpose they hold and to develop a variety of tools to break free from the cycle of addiction. If you are feeling ready to live a more present, hopeful and fulfilling life, please reach out to set up a free meet and greet with one of our highly trained therapists today! We want to extend our community to you.

When A Loved One Is Struggling With Substance Use, Gambling & Addiction

The effects of addiction impact far beyond just the person using substances or gambling, they impact you and your family. It is very painful to bear witness to someone you care deeply for harming themselves through their substance use and addiction. As a family member, you are often ready for change more quickly than your loved one who is substance involved and waiting for their desire to change can be frustrating, lonely and terrifying. Perhaps you are wondering if this is somehow your fault, if you're enabling their addiction and if you could do something different to help. Some family members cope by stepping back to avoid engaging with their loved one, while others take an opposite approach and try to influence or control the situation. This makes absolute sense, addiction is complicated and families often develop different ways to cope with the consequences of addiction.

Counselling allows you to explore all of the ways you have been impacted by your loved ones substance use or gambling. It's a wonderful place to come and bring all your questions about addiction, relapse and recovery. Therapy is a space for you to plan for the things you can control while providing you with support and a plan to deal with everything in between. You deserve a safe and supportive place to find freedom from the preoccupation, panic and chronic worry of your loved ones addiction.

At Counselling & Co. our goal is to ensure you have the tools and resources to create strategies for self-care to help sustain you during difficult times, establish and uphold your boundaries, and honor you and all your family has endured. While working together, we will set goals for how you want be in relationship to your loved one during active addiction, in a compassionate and loving way. We know this journey can feel isolating, which is why we invite you to connect with us to build out your circle of support and reassure you that you are not alone. If you are feeling ready to find healing from the effects of your loved ones addiction, please reach out and book your free meet & greet appointment today.
