Family Therapy

What happens in your family affects its members, and what happens to its members affects your family.

Family relationships can be hard. Really hard. Raising a family is a lot of responsibility.

How we raise our children will often have a profound impact on how they develop. If that's not a ton of pressure, we don't know what is. As caregivers, we try our best to raise happy, resilient humans, but our culture, communities, and our upbringing don't always make that as easy as we hope.

We understand you want to offer your kids a secure foundation to support their development and ability to deal with life's challenges. Through child and teen therapy, we explore the turbulent time that our children are faced with today, supporting your kiddo with their mental health, emotional development, and experiences of trauma and difficult family situations.

With family therapy, we explore behavioural patterns that prevent a family's ability to work together for their shared interest. We know how important it is for families to have a sense of attachment security and how difficult it can be to foster this during times of transition and change.

Counselling & Co. embraces all family structures. Our therapists welcome families with kids as young as 6 years old, as well as adult children who want to work on their relationship with their family members. Here we conceptualize your child and family distress from an attachment lens, pulling from attachment-related approaches to child and family therapy.

No matter what age or developmental stage your child is at, we will help you understand your child and family's needs and how as caregivers you can meet those needs. It is never too late to come to therapy.

What Families May Be Experiencing

Familial distress impacts all of its members. Oftentimes families find their way to us when one or more of its members are hurting, feeling distant, distressed from difficult experiences, enduring conflicts and relational injuries. Families that come to Counselling & Co. for child and family therapy may have experienced the following:

  • Arguing and can't seem to feel on the same page about important issues

  • High reactivity when together

  • Feeling worried about the future of your child

  • Feeling frustrated and unappreciated

  • Stuck in the same patterns of conflict

  • Exploring a potential or new diagnosis of Neurodiversity

  • Overwhelmed, exacerbated and out of control

  • Unsure of how to support your child through difficult transitions or times in their lives

  • Feeling distant and shut out

  • Difficulty making friends or maintaining peer relationships

  • Not sure what to say to your child(ren) when they are upset, struggling or lashing out

  • Worrisome behaviour like perfectionism and low self-esteem

Counselling & Co. supports your family system and the crucial role it plays in the co-regulation of emotional experience in your child, which will therefore help form the basis of their self-regulation of emotion as they grow.

How Family Therapy Can Help

In child and family therapy, you can expect your therapist to help your child increase their resilience and strengthen attachment bonds, which will allow you to come together to solve problems, alleviate suffering and respond to everyday stressors as a family unit. Some of the benefits of child and family therapy include:

  • Parental emotion coaching so you can tend to your child's big feelings

  • Learning to meet your child’s needs when they are feeling distressed

  • Helping your child to regulate their own body, behaviour and emotions

  • Deescalating arguments and reactive moments

  • Facilitating more positive interactions between family members

  • Feeling confident in forming healthy relationships

  • Communicating more clearly

  • Helping parents develop tools to manage when feeling pulled in multiple directions

  • Increased language and skills to manage big feelings

  • Helping teens to build self-awareness, self-worth and healthy forms of self-expression

Whether you are here for support for your child, teen or family, Counselling & Co. is here to help you carve a new way forward. Wherever possible, we try to include parents, as attachment focused work can be a very powerful experience in helping to resolve concerns, heal and grow together.
